Letters to Hope

The Journal of Isis Elfman for Her Daughter, Hope

Isis Elfman’s Frequently Asked Questions

Is Isis real?

Yes.

Is the journal real?

Yes.
Isis started writing this journal as soon as she knew she was pregnant. It was written in real time and is not a memoir or recreation. The date on each journal entry is the date it was written.

Why did she make her journal public?

Please read her answer to the ‘why public‘ question.

No, Really? This is just a creative writing exercise or internet stunt along the lines of LonelyGirl15, right?

As webmaster, I get that question often.

The fact of the matter is I have seen the original journal and even had lunch with Isis. When we first discussed her journal, I didn’t know what it would contain. Personal journals, aside from those by the famous, rarely make good reading. Her journal is compelling because it is real and raw, not because she is a literary master or backed by a marketing firm.

What about the other people mentioned?

Some names have been changed to shield people who did not specifically agree to have their real names used. In instances where we couldn’t (or didn’t want to) find people, aliases have been used. Places are authentic and the timeline is as it happened. Aside from formatting the text to put it online, the journal as you read it is exactly how it was written.

Aren’t you worried about people recognizing you, Isis? You write a lot of personal stuff in your journal.

The journal focuses on her feelings and emotions and, to a large part, is internal. The Isis I met at TooJay’s does not resonate the same as the one you meet in the journal. That is certainly not to say one is ‘fake’ and the other is ‘real’. (And which side would be which anyway?) The truth is that if you read the journal and, based on what you have read, think you may have bumped into Isis on the street, you most assuredly have not.

Based on what the readers have told us, it is far more likely you see yourself in the entries rather than someone you know.

Wait! You have readers?

Yes, we have readers. Isis is very thankful for her readers. It is comforting to know that some feelings are universal and that people across the internet are connecting with her life.

However, it’s not enough for you to read what she is telling her daughter. You should tell your kids, too. Tell them how you feel, how you became who you are and how they became how they are.

How do I contact Isis?

Do you have a pen? I’ll give you her cell phone number and home address… Not.

If you’re Oprah and want to give her a book deal, I can put you in touch. Otherwise, please respect that she is already sharing as much as she can. Don’t go all internet stalker on her.

I feel strongly about [XXX] journal entry and want to comment.
